Our timber Frame Process

Our Process

A timber frame isn’t just built—it’s thoughtfully designed, expertly crafted, and carefully assembled to stand the test of time.

At Midwest Custom Timber Frames, your vision is at the center of everything we do. Our proven process combines traditional craftsmanship with clear communication, guiding you from the initial concept through design, fabrication, frame raising, and final completion. Every phase is designed to keep your project organized, transparent, and built to last.

Midwest Custom Timber Frames

01: Custom design + Flexible

Every project begins with your vision. We don’t rely on stock plans or one-size-fits-all designs. Whether you come to us with completed architectural drawings or simply the beginning of an idea, we’ll work closely with you and your team, including your architect, engineer, general contractor, landscape designer, and interior designer—to create a custom timber frame that’s thoughtfully designed around your goals.

Midwest Custom Timber Frames

02: Expert Craftsmanship

Every timber frame is handcrafted using traditional mortise and tenon joinery, combining time-honored techniques with modern precision tools. Each connection is carefully hand-cut and fitted to create a structure that’s not only beautiful but built for lasting strength and performance.

03: Projects of Every Size

From timber frame porches and pavilions to custom homes, barns, lodges, and commercial buildings, we bring the same level of craftsmanship and attention to detail to every project. No matter the size or complexity, our commitment to quality never changes.

04: Transparent Pricing

Once we’ve reviewed your project goals and plans, we’ll provide a clear, detailed estimate outlining materials, labor, and overall project costs. After design is complete we will provide a clear outline not to exceed pricing. Unless requested otherwise all of our projects are priced inclusively. Everything from freight, crane costs, equipment rental, travel expenses etc. All miscellaneous costs are included. We believe transparency from the beginning leads to better planning and greater confidence throughout the building process.

Let’s Build something that lasts

Your timber frame journey begins with a conversation. Whether you’re planning a custom home, barn, commercial building, or outdoor living space, our team is here to guide you through every step of the process with craftsmanship, collaboration, and care.

06: Design + Planning

With your project moving forward, we coordinate the structural details, design requirements, and construction planning needed for a successful build. By working closely with your architect, engineer, general contractor, and project team, we help ensure your timber frame integrates seamlessly into the overall project.

07: Fabrication + Prep

After the design is finalized, fabrication begins. Using premium hardwoods like white oak and red oak, as well as softwoods including Douglas fir, white pine, and cedar, each timber is carefully cut, fitted, sanded, finished, and prepared for assembly. Every piece is crafted with precision to ensure an efficient frame raising and a smooth construction process.

08: Frame Raising + Dry-In

Once fabrication is complete, it’s time to bring the frame to life. Our team coordinates the frame raising and can assist with or provide Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) installation, as well as the installation or coordination of windows and doors. Every step is carefully planned to help move your project efficiently toward dry-in and the next phase of construction.
