Custom Timber Framing Basics

01. What types of wood do you use?

We primarily work with white oak, red oak, and Douglas fir, premium timber species chosen for their lasting strength, natural beauty, and proven performance. When a project requires a different look or structural characteristic, we can source additional timber species to fit your vision.

02. What size timbers do you typically use?

We commonly work with substantial structural timbers such as 8×8 and 8×10 beams and rafters, 6×8 joists, and 5×7 purlins. Smaller members such as 4×6 braces are used where appropriate. Larger timbers may be used for long spans or heavy structural loads.

03. What foundation types are compatible with timber frame buildings?

Timber frame structures can be built on slab-on-grade, crawlspace, basement foundations, or hybrid foundation systems depending on the design and site conditions.

04. How are timber frame buildings enclosed?

We typically enclose timber frames using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), which provide high-performance insulation and structural rigidity. SIP systems also simplify the installation of electrical wiring through pre-designed chase systems.

05. What is the finishing process for the timbers?

Each timber is carefully planed, sanded, and finished with a protective oil-based treatment before leaving our shop. After the frame is enclosed, additional finish coats can be applied based on your design preferences and the specific needs of your project. For outdoor structures, we’re also happy to recommend high-quality finishes designed to provide long-term protection against sun exposure and the elements.

06. What framing system do you use?

We primarily use a traditional timber frame system that allows for flexible design layouts and open interior spaces. This system also supports custom architectural detailing such as exposed staircases, trusses, and accent framing.

07. Can plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems be installed in a timber frame structure?

Yes. Timber frame buildings are designed to accommodate modern mechanical systems. Plumbing, HVAC, and electrical planning is coordinated during the design phase to ensure proper integration with the structural system and SIP panels.

Yes. We specialize in commercial timber frame construction, including event venues, wedding barns, chapels, lodges, wineries, distilleries, clubhouses, retreat centers, and community buildings throughout Missouri and the Midwest.

03. Do I need an architect before contacting Midwest Custom Timber Frames?

No. Some clients come to us with completed architectural plans, while others begin with an idea or rough sketch. We’re happy to work alongside homeowners, architects, designers, and builders at any stage of the project.

05. How does timber framing differ from post-and-beam construction?

Timber framing uses traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with hardwood pegs, creating a structure that relies on precision craftsmanship rather than exposed hardware. Post-and-beam construction also uses large timbers, but the connections are typically made with exposed steel plates, brackets, and bolts instead of traditional wood joinery.

06. How does timber framing differ from log construction?

While both celebrate the beauty of natural wood, they are built very differently. Timber frame construction uses a structural framework of large timbers connected with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, while log homes are constructed by stacking logs to form the walls, often with conventionally framed or trussed roof systems.

07. Can timber framing be used to construct passive or net-zero structures?

Yes. When paired with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) and other high-performance building systems, timber frame construction can be an excellent choice for passive and net-zero homes. We’ll work with your architect, builder, or design team to help achieve your energy-efficiency goals.

08. Can my timber frame home/structure be maintenance free?

Yes. Timber frame structures enclosed with SIPs can be finished using many of the same low-maintenance exterior products found on conventionally built homes. Some clients choose virtually maintenance-free exterior finishes, while others prefer traditional materials that require periodic upkeep to preserve their natural appearance.

09. What R value do SIPs provide?

The Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) we commonly use can provide insulation values (R-Values) of up to R-50, depending on the panel thickness and project requirements. Most projects use insulation levels that balance energy efficiency with local building code requirements.

10. Are there any special HVAC equipment requirements?

While not required, we highly recommend incorporating an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) or Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) into highly energy-efficient homes. These systems help maintain healthy indoor air quality by continuously exchanging fresh outdoor air while minimizing energy loss.

11. How do I prepare my job-site for the arrival of my timber frame package?

Before your timber frame package arrives, the foundation, subfloor, and all required backfilling should be complete. Utility trenches should also be backfilled, and adequate construction access must be available for material delivery, crane operation, and equipment needed during the frame raising process.

12. What is mortise and tenon joinery?

Mortise and tenon joinery is a traditional woodworking technique that connects two pieces of timber without relying on visible mechanical fasteners. Instead, precisely cut joints are secured using hardwood pegs or wedges. This time-tested method has been used for centuries in everything from fine furniture and cabinetry to the heavy timber structures we build today.

13. Will nails, screws, or steel be used to construct my timber frame?

Our goal is always to use traditional mortise and tenon joinery whenever possible. However, certain design requirements, engineering specifications, or local building codes may require specialized screws or concealed steel connections. When these situations arise, we design the frame so that these components remain hidden, preserving the timeless appearance of exposed timber craftsmanship.
